– Comfort Layer

The comfort layer (also known as the upholstery layer, comment in the high density foam mattress with spring) is the top layer and is made of various foams or fibers to provide cushioning and comfort at the surface. Most common materials in the comfort layer are regular polyurethane foam, visco-elastic, gel memory foam, or latex. The cheaper options may have a top layer consisting of polyester material, cotton, or polypropylene (celestra).

– Support Layer

Also known as the spring core, this is the main bulk or body of the interior which provides the support whilst sleeping. By looking at the adjacent image, one can see it is made up of hundreds or sometimes thousands of steel springs, also known as coil springs, or coils. There are various factors to consider within this layer which all combine to determine whether it’s a firm or soft, and whether it’s an expensive or cheap mattress, such factors include (but not limited to) the gauge and count. And For example, Twin spring mattress is including 350pcs bonnell coil.

– Fabric Cover

The fabric cover (or Ticking) is what encases the whole 8 Inch mattress i.e the comfort and support layers. This encasing can come in all colors and patterns, and is mostly made with polyester, Damask and knitted fabric. The most expensive mattress may have ticking containing a combination with rayon, cotton, silk, or wool.

FAQ

1.Why doesn't my linen fit my new mattress?

Today's plusher, premium bedding feature increased mattress heights.

Older type sheets may not fit these new mattresses however most linen manufacturers are increasing the depths of their fitted sheets.

2.How do I select the right size bed?

Always buy the biggest bed you can. The more room you have in your bed the better quality of sleep you will have, especially if you're sleeping with a partner.

Two people sleeping together should select a queen or preferably a king size mattress and base to ensure both individuals have enough space for a good nights sleep.

3.Does the feel of a mattress change with time?

It may take several weeks for you to become accustomed to your new sleeping surface.

In a top quality mattress, the comfort layers will mould to your body shape, enhancing your sleeping comfort. Generally, beds will soften over time. For the best results to give a consistent feel, the springs must be heat tempered. While latex and new foam technologies offer superior comfort and support it must be noted that the body changes over time and these changes may lead to the mattress feeling different.

4.How do I know if I need a new mattress?

As a guide you should change your mattress every 8-10 years.

Your body should tell you when it's time for a new bed. If you regularly wake up feeling stiff and sore or if you are not sleeping as well as you did a year ago, it may be time to replace what you're sleeping on.

At least twice a year, check for visible signs of wear and tear and ask yourself if you're sleeping better or worse than you did a year ago. If worse, a new bed may be the answer to improve your sleep.
