We often joke that having enough to eat and wear is considered happiness, but being able to sleep well is the true enjoyment. Unfortunately, sleep quality cannot be solved by spending money on a mattress. We have changed several mattresses and spent a lot of money on them. At first, we thought buying an expensive mattress was no problem. But later we discovered that sleep comfort is not just about the mattress itself. Sometimes mattresses are sturdy and durable, but that may not necessarily be suitable for us. As we age, our lower back problems become more apparent, so we have higher and higher requirements for mattresses.
What truly changed our sleep experience was the later attempt at mattress toppers. This' little thing 'added to the mattress has completely transformed our bed. Today we want to share this experience, perhaps it can help us avoid some detours.
Ⅱ. What is a Thick Mattress Topper?
Before we came into contact with the mattress topper, we really couldn't distinguish the difference between it and the mattress cover or mattress protective pad. At that time, we naively thought that having a cover on the bed was enough. Later on, after actual use, I realized that they were completely different:
Mattress cover: More like clothing worn on a mattress, its main function is to prevent dust and dirt. When we wash the bed sheets, we can also wash off the dust along with them.
Mattress protector: generally very skinny. It can correctly prevent the leakage of beverages, making it a terrific desire for families with youngsters and pets.
Mattress topper: A cushion layer which could correctly trade the softness and comfort of the mattress. It's far located on a mattress with a thickness typically among 5-10 centimeters, imparting extra cushioning and support.
Simply put, a mattress topper is the 'comfort layer' between the bed and the body. It can instantly make an ordinary or even slightly uncomfortable bed soft or supportive, depending entirely on the material and thickness we choose.
We were surprised when we first used it - it turned out that just adding a layer of topper made the entire sleep experience completely different.
Ⅲ. What Are the Functions and Advantages of Thickening Mattresses?
1. Make the bed more comfortable
We bought a slightly stiff memory sponge mattress before. At first, I thought it was quite good, with strong support and feeling that it was helpful for the spine. After sleeping for a long time, we will feel uncomfortable, especially when sleeping on our side, our shoulders and hips will be compressed and painful.
Later, a soft mattress topper was added, and the feeling completely changed. Lying down, the whole person feels like being gently supported, with a soft touch of support, not sinking too deeply or becoming stiff. We often joke that it's like adding a layer of 'clouds' to the bed.
2. It is helpful for the lower back
We are not very old, but sitting in the office for a long time often leads to back and waist problems. Especially me, I often wake up in the middle of the night with lower back pain. After using topper, the situation improved significantly. It can evenly distribute body weight and keep the spine in a more natural state.
Once on a business trip, I slept in a hotel bed and clearly felt that it was not as hard and uncomfortable as Topper's bed. At that moment, we realized that toppers had quietly become a necessity for our sleep.
3. Improve the lifespan of the mattress
Changing the mattress is a big deal, not only expensive, but also troublesome. Our second mattress has been in use for four years, and the surface has already collapsed, but it is not damaged. It feels a pity to throw it away. Later, a thick topper was added, which restored the smoothness when sleeping. It is equivalent to extending the lifespan of the mattress with a small amount of money, which is particularly cost-effective for us.
4. Warm in winter and cool in summer
The topper we are currently using also has a cooling function. In summer, lying down at night won't feel stuffy and hot, and there's no need to frequently flip over to find a cool place. In winter, we will switch to wool toppers and lie down warm. That feeling is like the moment when we crawl into bed, and the whole person relaxes.
Ⅳ. Common Mattress Thickening Topper Materials
The different materials determine the sleeping sensation of the topper. We have also stepped into pitfalls and bought unsuitable ones, so here is a summary of our experience:
Memory Foam
Fits the body and is suitable for people who sleep on their side. We are both side sleepers, so we rely heavily on memory sponges. It can 'remember' body curves and reduce pressure on shoulders and hips.
Latex (Latex)
More elastic and breathable than memory sponges. Using a latex topper in summer can hardly make you feel stuffy at night.
Down/wool
This topper is particularly suitable for winter, soft and warm. Cleaning is a bit troublesome, but the sleeping experience is really comfortable.
hybrid
Some toppers combine different materials together, such as an outer layer of fiber and an inner layer of latex or sponge. A friend of ours uses this type, which is said to be both supportive and soft, and can be considered as "both fish and bear paw needed".
Ⅴ. Do We Really Need Mattress Topper?
Whether we buy toppers or not depends on individual needs. But our own experience can give us some reference:
The bed is too hard, it is suitable to add a soft topper to improve comfort.
The bed is too soft, we can add a harder topper to increase support.
The mattress is not broken yet, but it is not very comfortable. Topper is the most cost-effective choice, which is more cost-effective than directly replacing the mattress.
Topper can help distribute stress and relieve soreness when dealing with lower back problems.
We both now even feel that the mattress topper is an upgrade package for sleep. There is no topper, the bed is just an ordinary bed; With toppers, the bed truly becomes our 'comfortable little world'.
Ⅵ. Conclusion
Looking back, we have spent a lot of unnecessary money, bought unsuitable mattresses, and also troubled ourselves because of poor sleep. But now we have finally found a cost-effective solution, which is mattress topper.
It is not a substitute for mattresses, but a perfect supplement to mattresses. It can improve the sleep experience, improve the lifespan of the mattress, and select suitable materials for different needs. More importantly, it allows us to truly experience what it means to have a good bed that can heal a whole day of fatigue.
If we are worried about sleep quality, we may want to try mattress topper. Perhaps, like us, we will never be able to live without it again.
