Do not sleep soft mattresses, how to judge the firmness of baby mattress?

Infant sleep accidents are a 0% or 100% probability event, which is 100% when encountering, or 0% when not encountered. In order to minimize sleep accidents, the authority's sleep safety guidelines emphasize that the baby should be in a supine position, sleep on a hard mattress, and have no other bedding or soft objects on the bed.

If you used the thin mattress is too soft, it is sag due to the weight of the baby's head, which increases the risk of suffocation after accidentally turning over. I don't know if you have doubts, how hard is the baby thin mattress? How soft is it unreasonable?

In fact, Australia and New Zealand have product specifications for the firmness of baby thin mattresses, and (AS/NZS 8811.1:2013) the United States has similar standards. However, these standards are not currently mandatory by law, and therefore we may not be able to distinguish whether the product meets safety standards from the manufacturer's statement. There is no similar safety standard in China. How do we judge whether the mattress for the child is safe?

According to Australia and New Zealand's baby thin mattress firmness and safety standards, there are really methods for parental testing. Parents can use these simple operations to determine whether the thin mattress is hard or too soft to meet safety standards.

Home-testing method:

Tool:

  1. 12 CDs
  2. plastic wrap
  3. Two barrels of 1 liter milk or juice, the bottom of the milk jar or juice jar needs to be square and 7 cm long.

Step:

1.Twelve CD discs are stacked together and wrapped in plastic wrap.

2.Place the bundled CD disc in the center of the thin mattress

3.Place 1 liter of milk or juice on the CD and place the bottom of the milk or juice jar over 4 cm beyond the edge of the CD.

4.Place the second 1 liter milk or juice stack on the first jar.

5.After stacking the balance, observe whether the first can is beyond the 4 cm portion of the CD disc to contact the surface of the mattress.

6.If the cane touches the surface of the mattress 4 cm beyond the edge of the CD disc, it means that the thin mattress test is too soft and does not meet the standards of the baby mattress.

The inventor of this baby thin mattress test method was Dr. Ron Somers from the South Australian Government, Department of Health and Ageing, and was first published in the Australian and New Zealand Public Health Journal in 2012. In addition, Dr. Somers received the most prestigious award from the US government in 2013 for his contribution to safe sleep.
